03.15.10 – Spelling Bee

Time to get serious on a Monday night!

Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn hosts SPELLING BEES for adults every other Monday. So I’m thinking… if I’m already going to be out at night, why not try and be educational with it?!

After checking out their blog, it seems like a pretty chill and not so much an OMG-PEOPLE-ARE-SO-GOING-TO-JUDGE-ME kind of event.  Some of the words from last year’s finals were: imprimis, overslaugh, gramineous, avenaceous, moue, materfamilias, coetaneous, dermatoglyphics, quodlibet, moirologist, and schwerpunkt but COME ON those were the FINALS!

Although I was more of a math kid in school, I really want to try my skills at something like this.  Even if I only make it to the “C-O-I” of “coetaneous,” I will be proud to say that I entered a Spelling Bee to once in my lifetime.

So listen up people: let’s do Monday, March 15.  The signup starts at 7:00 PM and the ‘Bee starts at 7:30.  See you there?!

#musicmonday Chelsea Grin

Now, I’ll be honest here and say that I have been reluctant to get into this genre for a while.  I just had a hard time handling the constant high pitch screams, muddy guitars, and blistering tempo.  I don’t mind that here and there a bit, but I need a GROOVE!  And lucky for me, Chelsea Grin knows how to bring it.

#musicmonday Stray From The Path

I was doin some net surfing the other day and saw that the Atticus Metal Tour II was coming to town soon, so I thought I’d check out who was on the bill.

From the first play on their myspace, I was into em.  They remind me of earlier Every Time I Die mixed with a dose of Converge and kickass-ness.

I was so excited by their sound that I hit up the band on twitter and they even wrote back!

Best Show Yet: Norma Jean

So a few months ago, we signed my favorite band in the whole wide world (no joke) — Norma Jean.

In all seriousness, their music has played a HUGE part in my life through very difficult times.

But back to the rocking.  The first NJ jam I heard was “Memphis Will Be Laid to Waste,” from the debut album Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child.  Most (but not me) say it’s their best song (so far), but regardless it’s the one that got me hooked on the band from the get-go.  Singer Cory Brandon put it well at their last show when he said,

We’ve never not played this song! Rrrrrrrr………

I know, right?  Amazing.

I got to fly down to Atlanta in October to hang out with my favorite band for a whole day.  YEAH.  I hardly slept the night before, and it was quite difficult to be the slynam from their new label and not the slynam who absolutely loves their music.  But of course, I did the latter most of the time anyway.

In December, NJ came to NY to play at the Blender Theatre.  The gf was able to take some really great flip cam footage, check it all out below.

Easily the best show of my life thus far.  But I’ve got many more Norma Jean shows to attend…

Now that LOST is back on, Jersey Shore Who?

Tonight is the big night!  The best show on TV, The Jersey Shore LOST returns!!!

My memory isn’t too great, so I don’t even remember too much about last season except that Juliet fell down a hole, blew up something (maybe), and the ending “LOST” screen was white instead of black.  BUT I am really excited for this thing to be back on the air, and the fact that it’s premiering on Groundhog Day is quite peculiar…
