This summer, Flowing Data posted this very interesting article on movie trilogies. The Rotten Tomatoes score for Toy Story 3 had just come out (99%), so they decided to compare scores for “true trilogies” as listed on Wikipedia and present them in a couple of nice looking graphs (which, by the way, is what Flowing Data is all about / just plain cool).

So first they made this chart (see below), which I think is actually a bit hard to decipher…well the top half anyway.

I generally agree with chart–Bourne got better with age, MI:3 was bad ass, Ocean’s 12 was such a cop out, and yeah, like HSM 2 was totally lame.

The atrocity in this chart that I refuse to get over is WTF is up with the Back to the Future chart?! In my book, BTTF 2 is the clear champ of the series, followed closely by 1, then 3 by a slightly larger gap. I think of all the things Bobby Z and Stevie Speils had to come up with to put Marty in the future!! Hoverboards, flying cars (what other movie have you seen that does that so realistically) and then the genius for them to actually GO BACK to the Enchantment Under the Sea dance from the first movie!!! That is pure motion picture gold right there!!!!

The final tune was “We’ve Got a Situation,” but who knows it that was Jersey-inspired or not. They dragged out the last kickass riff several times. ‘Twas mighty.

If your rowing team has enough money to put their rowers’ ugly mugs on a bus, that doesn’t mean they’re good (aka fast). Good rowing teams aren’t about swag.

They’re about SWAGGER.

I may or may not be jealous that I didn’t have this when I rowed. We had Pater Pan busses that were named after Disney characters. But we won races.

On Monday I went with a few friends over to the Alligator Lounge in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for some trivia. I can’t quite remember all the questions, but I can say that our team “I Can’t I’m Mormon” took second place! Who knew we could be so smart on a Monday night.

Now as for the reason why I can’t remember any questions… in between trivia rounds they had “shot questions,” where instead of writing the answers down, you shouted them out and the first person to do that would get a shot (of the cheapest whiskey). The category that night was “debut albums.” They say the debut album, you should out the artist. I got…

“Cracked Rear View”
“Bleach”
“Faith”

And then we played some pool.

So even though this post is named for the headlining band at the show I caught last night a couple weeks ago (took a while to finish this one…), I didn’t see em. So there isn’t much to remember. I’ve been trying to see A Day To Remember for over a year. I missed them in April 09, BOTH Warped Tour 2009 dates I went to, and again last night. Four times I’ve missed this band! Ever since I read their great cover story in Alternative Press last fall, I’ve been really into their music and their story.

But how about I talk about the bands I acutally did see…

Enter Shikari

Whoa! This band clearly sounds better indoors rather than the set I saw at last year’s Bamboozle in the middle of the afternoon. Their mix of heavy riffs, synths, London accents and even a dub-step breakdown was insane! All the bass they pump through their speakers is amazing.

Silverstein

You know what. I thought I was into this band, it’s gone back to a “meh…” for me. When I saw them in 2008 supporing Chiodos (at one of the best shows I’ve ever been to), I dug em. But at this show I thought it was just weak screamo. I give them props that they’ve been around for a good amount of time, but I think their sound has changed so much over those years and they don’t know where they should take it from here on out. I mean when Shane introduced an oldie, all that I proceded to hear was old emo/post-hardcore melodies and rhythms (aka very 2004/2005). No thanks.

August Burns Red

Man, this band absolutely rules. They’ve been in my top 5 artists on last.fm ever since I signed up to scrobble. Yes, it might be breakdown after breakdown, but these guys can PLAY. Main songwriter JB really knows how to write the riffs, and the stage presence of frontman Jake Luhrs shines (or, burns?) HARD. Especially on “White Washed”. Holy crap that song rules.

It’s not some cheesy, campy, comic book related movie like… um Ghost Rider (also starring Nick Cage) or Batman & Robin. It cuts right to the chase, which I love in movies.

Dude likes superheroes in comics, so he tries to be one, except he forgets he’s a comic book nerd and thus has no idea how to fight. In comes in Nick Cage (one of his best roles in a while, but that isn’t saying much…) and some AWESOME LITTLE GIRL with a ‘tude and a mouth known as Hit-Girl. Here’s their debut in the movie:

That part ruled. Here’s some more of her bad-assery from the movie: (NOTICE – clip contains some potty words…)

And boom! It just keeps getting better and better from there. Lots of blood (but not gory, more arcade-like violence) and characters that hint at being self-aware of how awkwardly hilarious some scenes are–I had a lot of fun watching it. Also does make you kinda wonder… why not be a superhero?!

More trailer goodness:

Cause these things go hand in hand, right? And posting a New Year’s Resolution list on the first of March is timely, right?

On the drive back from VA after the winter holidays, the gf and I were checking out a gift she received: Sasha Cagen’s, To-Do List: From Buying Milk to Finding a Soul Mate, What Our Lists Reveal About Us. Luckily I was able to look past the long title and actually open the book! It was pretty cool, yet simple. It’s just a collection of people’s to-do lists for various categories of life: Dream Jobs, Relationships, Obsessive-Compulsive, etc. In between taking naps while the gf drove (btw she’s awesome) we decided to try our own versions and am posting them mine here for all to see.

First I had to get some stuff off my chest–pet peeves:

I’d also like to make these additions:

With people:

Those who don’t know what personal space is.

People with walk slow / short legs.

People who are generally in the way, know it, and DGAF. I will be more than happy to drop a shoulder into you if you’re blocking the subway door. I did once and I realized NYC has changed me if felt SO GOOD.

Those who don’t use as much enthusiastic text in emails / letters / text messages. Yes, I AM that excited to tell you that I can do a conference call at 2:30 or when I’m out of the subway.

With Bands:

When they don’t look on stage while performing. I paid to see your axe, not your ass.

“How y’all doin tonight?” … “I said, HOW Y’ALL DOIN TONIGHT?!” enough man! I’m doing fine!

But here’s something I’m undecided on: people who have a big “hissssss” sound when they say words with “s” sounds. Do you know what I mean? It’s like if they said “So, I thought of something for us to do on Saturday,” it would be almost like a whistling parrot is mixed into their into there voice or trying to talk over them. I used to think it was cool, but now it just bothers my ears.

Ok, ok, onto the positivity.

I’ll just let this one speak for itself:

(I would like to mention though, that the bourbon and blogging lines are doing quite well, thank you very much)

Time to get serious on a Monday night!

Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn hosts SPELLING BEES for adults every other Monday. So I’m thinking… if I’m already going to be out at night, why not try and be educational with it?!

After checking out their blog, it seems like a pretty chill and not so much an OMG-PEOPLE-ARE-SO-GOING-TO-JUDGE-ME kind of event. Some of the words from last year’s finals were: imprimis, overslaugh, gramineous, avenaceous, moue, materfamilias, coetaneous, dermatoglyphics, quodlibet, moirologist, and schwerpunkt but COME ON those were the FINALS!

Although I was more of a math kid in school, I really want to try my skills at something like this. Even if I only make it to the “C-O-I” of “coetaneous,” I will be proud to say that I entered a Spelling Bee to once in my lifetime.

So listen up people: let’s do Monday, March 15. The signup starts at 7:00 PM and the ‘Bee starts at 7:30. See you there?!

o-n-o-m-a-t-o-p-o-e-i-a….

It’s hosted by BOBBYBLUE & JENISFAMOUS:

Here is the space:

And here is a Bee-er in action!
